Notes for World History

WHY WAS MUSSOLINI EVENTUALLY OVERTHROWN?

  • The majority of the Italians were against Italy’s entry into the Second World War on Germany’s side. They felt that Italy was becoming a German satellite.
  • The general public suffered hardships as taxes were increased to pay for the war, there was food rationing, massive inflation and considerable fall in wages.
  • Italians suffered a string of defeats in the war culminating in the surrender of all Italian troops in North Africa.
  • Breaking point came when the Allied capture Sicily, but Mussolini refused to make peace because that would have meant deserting Hitler. The king dismissed him. Nobody tried to save him and fascism disappeared.
