FIRST STEPS IN COOPERATION
Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC): Set up in 1948 as a committee of 16 nations to best use the American Marshall Aid, it was the first initiative towards economic unity.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization ( NATO) : It was created in 1949 as a mutual defence system in case of an attack on one of the member states.
The Council of Europe : Set up in 1949, this was the first attempt at some sort of political unity. It consisted of foreign ministers of all 18 members.
