WORLD HISTORY: THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS – Part 1
ORIGIN AND AIM OF THE LEAGUE
- The League of Nations was included as the last of Wilson’s 14 points.
- One of its mains aims was to settle international disputes before they got out of hand, and so prevent war from ever breaking out again.
- It formally came into existence in 1920, the same day that the Versailles Treaty came into operation.
- The League had two main aims:
- To maintain peace through collective security: if one attacked state attacked another, the member states of the League would act together to restrain the aggressor, either by economic or by military sanctions.
- To encourage international co-operation, in order to solve economic and social problems.
