WHY to choose Psychology optional in UPSC Civil Services Exam

(Psychology Optional classes for UPSC)

Optional plays an important role in ones selection and securing a decent RANK in UPSC exam. Generally, when students start their preparation, don’t pay heed to selection of optional. This puts them on backfoot in their successive attempts.

We advice students to take due care while starting their preparation and choosing an optional. Here, we bring out few pointers which can be taken into consideration if one is to choose Psychology Optional for UPSC.

Is it mandatory to choose an Optional based on ones academic background ? What are important factors to be considered while deciding on optional ?

1st

Interesting

Psychology is about human behaviour and mind. Thus it becomes easier for one to develop interest in the subject – as we can correlate with the subject matter and apply it in our day to day lives.

What if optional that interests me now is not matching with my academic background ?

2nd

Overlap with ETHICS paper

Few topics from psychology and overall understanding of human behaviour and human responses can be used in ETHICS paper. This has the potential to give an edge to an aspirant in GS Paper IV.

3rd

Easy to Understand & Comprehend

Because of this trait, psychology as an optional is chosen by students from varied backgrounds. Whether you are an Engineer, MBA , doctor or a plain graduate – subject matter of psychology is easy to comprehend.

If my optional helps me in any paper of General studies, should I go for it ? Does it add to my selection or will it just provide me a psychological comfort ?

I don’t think an optional has to be Scoring . If I work hard, I will be selected anyhow even if optional is not scoring.

Is this the correct form of reasoning before opting an optional ? Or is some kind of contractual thinking that’s taking place here ? Or is it an apt case of optimism bias ?

With good conceptual clarity , revision and sufficient answer writing practice – an aspirant can score above average marks in Psychology optional. One must be prepared to work hard and do self reading to gain mastery on the subject which has a direct correlation with one’s marks in MAIN EXAMINATION.

5th

Easy availability of Reading Material

Another good aspect for psychology optional is good reading material in the form of standard books is available in psychology optional. This takes away a truckload of burden as in few optionals gathering reading material is itself a challenge.

I think reading books is not important. What I need to do is memorize coaching material and I will be selected in Civil Services.

Don’t ever become a victim of such line of thought. Reading books are as important as our decision to sit in this exam. If you only rely on material provided by any institute, you are planing to play with fire. Our advice is , an easy availability of good reading material is a crucial factor in ones success.

As interview is a test of one’s personality, here also psychology comes to our rescue. With better understanding of psychological processes and human behaviour, psychology optional students are always better prepared and develop a good potential to score better marks in Civil Services Interview.

Strong LINK with Interview

With all this if you have right guidance, I think there is no reason that one cannot achieve the dream of becoming a Civil Servant. As it is said, ‘ where there is a WILL there’s a WAY’ , if you are determined for your success, we are always there for a hand holding.
