Vice President Urges Medical Fraternity to Create Awareness

  • The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated a free Medical Camp at Swarna Bharat Trust, in Hyderabad today.
  • He expressed his concern over the rising trend of non-communicable diseases and urged people to avoid sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy dietary habits.
  • Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases, tend to be of long duration and are the result of a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental and behaviours factors.
  • NCD is not transmissible directly from one person to another.
  • NCDs include Parkinson’s disease, strokes, most heart diseases, most cancers, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, cataracts, and others.
  • The Vice President asked youth to shun junk food and pointed out that traditional Indian food was time-tested, seasonal and suitable to Indian climatic conditions.
  • The Vice President noted the need to bridge the urban-rural gap in providing modern healthcare facilities and urged the private sector to supplement the efforts of the governments in catering to the rural population.
  • Ayushman Bharat Yojana, the national health scheme launched on September 23, 2018 to provide adequate medical facilities to all and to bridge the Urban-Rural gap in health services.
  • Ayushman Bharat Yojana or Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) is a centrally sponsored scheme launched in 2018, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India.
  • The scheme aims at making interventions in primary, secondary and tertiary care systems, covering both preventive and promotive health, to address healthcare holistically.
  • He suggested a mandatory rural service for young doctors after passing out of the college.

Himalayan Heights Motorcycle Expedition Flagged in at Leh

  • Himalayan Heights Motorcycle Expedition from Leh to Karakoram Pass successfully completed on 20 April.
  • The expedition that began on 07 Apr 19 traversed over 1000 Km through Eastern Ladakh, Khardung La and Chang La passes on the Ladakh Range at altitudes over 17000 ft.​​

  • The expedition was as a part of celebrating 20 years of Kargil Vijay Diwas.
  • Kargil Vijay Diwas, is named after the success of Operation Vijay. On this day, 26 July 1999, India won the Kargil war successfully and took command of the high outposts which had been lost to Pakistani intruders.

Launch of Yard 12706

  • Guided Missile Destroyer Imphal, 20 April 2019 was launched at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai.

  • Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chief of the Naval Staff launched this third ship of Project 15B.
  • Project 15B also known as The Visakhapatnam class is a class of stealth guided missile destroyers currently under construction for the Indian Navy.
  • This class comprises four ships – Visakhapatnam, Mormugao, Imphal and Porbandar all of which are being built by the Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in India.
  • Project 15B ships feature cutting edge advanced technology and are comparable to the best ships of similar class anywhere in the world.
  • These ships have been designed indigenously by the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design, New Delhi.
  • Each ship spans 163 meters in length and 17.4 meters at beam and displaces 7,300 tonnes.
  • This ship will be propelled by four gas turbines to achieve speed in excess of 30 knots.
  • The P15B destroyers incorporate new design concepts for improved survivability, sea keeping, stealth and maneuverability.
  • P15B ships will be equipped to carry and operate two multiple role helicopters.
  • This ship is packed with an array of state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, including multi-functional surveillance radars and vertically launched missile system for long distance engagement of shore, sea-based and air targets.
  • A vertical launching system (VLS) is an advanced system for holding and firing missiles on mobile naval platforms, such as surface ships and submarines.
  • This ship is a hallmark of self-reliance attained by our country in warship design and shipbuilding, and a shining example of the ‘Make in India’
