Important Elements of an Essay

An essay  is a piece of writing, narrated in a manner to present a truthful and vivid picture in  front of the reader. In UPSC, where the time is limited and the marks are counted in final merit, it is quite important to master the art of essay writing well in time. Here, 5 broad elements (5C formula) are listed (rest will be discussed during lectures).

Essay writing is an art and so by the very definition can be learnt by practicing it correctly.

Increase Your marks from 80-90 to 140-150 – if you incorporate the learnings and practice you will definitely get above average marks.

1st

Thesis Statement

An essay should have a clear and concise thesis statement that outlines the main argument or point of the essay. The thesis statement sets the tone and direction of the essay and helps the reader understand the purpose and focus of the essay.

Thoughtful Expression: It is a kind of projective technique wherein your piece of writing reflects your thinking pattern, analytical capacity, decision making capability or, in nutshell, your depth in personality.

The introduction is the opening section of the essay and should be attention-grabbing and engaging. It should provide background information on the topic, introduce the thesis statement, and set the context for the essay. A well-crafted introduction can hook the reader and create interest in the essay.

Introduction

3rd

Body Paragraphs

The body paragraphs form the core of the essay and should present arguments or evidence to support the thesis statement. Each body paragraph should have a clear topic sentence that introduces the main idea of the paragraph, followed by supporting evidence, examples, and analysis to substantiate the argument. Proper organization and coherence within the body paragraphs are crucial for a well-structured essay.

An effective essay should be supported by relevant and reliable evidence and examples. This could include facts, statistics, research findings, quotations, anecdotes, or case studies that support the main argument. The use of evidence and examples helps to strengthen the essay’s credibility, persuade the reader, and enhance the overall quality of the essay.

4th

Evidence and Examples

The conclusion is the final section of the essay and should provide a concise summary of the main points discussed in the essay. It should restate the thesis statement in a different way, summarize the key arguments, and provide a closing thought or reflection. A strong conclusion leaves a lasting impression on the reader and reinforces the main argument of the essay.
