WORLD HISTORY: INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS BETWEEN 1919-33 – Part 5

HITLER’S FOREIGN POLICY

Hitler aimed to make Germany into a great power again by

  • Destroying the Versailles settlement
  • Building up the army
  • Recovering lost territory
  • Bringing all German-speaking people inside the Reich ; this would involve annexation of Austria and taking territory from Czechoslovakia and Poland.

Hitler began his foreign policy with an almost unbroken series of successes, some of which are as follows:

  • He withdrew Germany from the World Disarmament Conference and from the League of Nations.
  • He announced the reintroduction of conscription, a breach of Versailles treaty.
  • He sent troops in the demilitarised zone of Rhineland, a breach of both Versailles and Locarno treaty.
  • He signed Anti-Comintern Pact with Japan and Italy.
  • Making Austria a part of the Third Reich was Hitler’s greatest success to date.

Hitler was allowed to go away with all these violations of the Versailles settlement because of the policy of ‘appeasement’ followed by Britain and France.
