WORLD HISTORY: INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS BETWEEN 1919-33 – Part 2

FRENCH ATTEMPT TO DEAL WITH GERMANY

The French, suffered in two German invasions, wanted to make sure that the Germans never again violated the sovereignty of France. The French tried the following methods to deal with this problem:

  • Trying to keep Germany weak: France insisted on a harsh peace settlement with Germany such as limitations on army strength and armaments, huge war reparations, forcing Germany to pay.
  • Network of alliances and a strong League: France tried to increase her security by building up a network of alliances such as ‘ Little Entente’. Further, France worked for a strong League of Nations to compel aggressive powers to behave themselves.
  • Compromise and reconciliation: France was prepared to accept a compromise solution to the reparations problem; this led to the Dawes Plan. Further, France’s attempt to improve relations with Germany led to Locarno Treaties, Kellog-Briand Pact and Young Plan.
  • Tougher attitude towards Germany: The death of Streseman, the world economic crisis and the growth of support in Germany for the Nazis, alarmed the French and made them adopt a tougher attitude towards Germany.
