Cannot change social dynamics without women’s involvement in the economy: Vice President

  • The Vice President of India Addressed the National Conclave on Women’s Empowerment through Financial Literacy organized by the Learning Links Foundation in Hyderabad
  • Financial literacy is the possession of the set of skills and knowledge that allows an individual to make informed and effective decisions with all of their financial resources.
  • India is the second largest nation in the world in terms of population and home to 17.5% of the world’s population.
  • Almost half of India’s population comprises women and about 65 per cent of the people are below the age of 35 years.
  • IMF projected fastest growing economy like India to grow at 7.3 per cent this fiscal and 7.5 per cent in 2020 and is poised to become a US $ 5 trillion economy in next five years.
  • The Vice President complimented the Jaadu Ginni Ka campaign, a financial literacy initiative in India working in 15 states.

Jaadu Ginni ka programme

  • “Jaadu Ginni ka” program is being implemented with the support of Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA), Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, State rural livelihood mission across Rajasthan, Odisha, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Navy Wives welfare association (NWWA).
  • Jaadu Ginni Ka, a financial literacy program started by Vodafone India Foundation.
  • It is Launched in May 2018, an awareness programmes on financial literacy aims to educate Indians on financial literary and help them come under the ambit of financial inclusion.
  • ‘Jaadu Ginni Ka’ programme comprises of useful real-world topics such as basic financial concepts, borrowings, investments, financial planning, digital financial tools etc that can significantly help underserved sections of the society.

National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM)

  • National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) is a poverty alleviation project implemented by Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India.
  • This scheme is focused on promoting self-employment and organization of rural poor. The basic idea behind this programme is to organize the poor into SHG (Self Help Groups) groups and make them capable for self-employment.
  • The scheme was succeeded by Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana on 25 September 2015.

Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana or DAY (DDU-AY)

  • Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana is a Government of India scheme for the helping the poor by providing skill training.
  • The initial scheme Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) was launched in 1999. It was renamed as National Rural Livelihood Mission in 2011. Finally they were merged into DDU-AY.
  • The objective of the scheme is to train 0.5 million people in urban areas per annum from 2016. In rural areas the objective is to train 1 million people by 2017.

Self Help Groups

  • A self-help group (SHG) is a financial intermediary committee usually composed of 10–20 local women or men.
  • An SHG (self-help groups) may be registered or unregistered.
  • It typically comprises a group of micro entrepreneurs having homogeneous social and economic backgrounds; all voluntarily coming together to save regular small sums of money, mutually agreeing to contribute to a common fund and to meet their emergency needs on the basis of mutual help.
  • Advantages of financing through SHGs
  • An economically poor individual gains strength as part of a group.
  • Besides, financing through SHGs reduces transaction costs for both lenders and borrowers.
  • Borrowers as part of an SHG minimize expenses on travel (to and from the branch and other places) for completing paper work and on the loss of workdays in canvassing for loans.
  • Where successful, SHGs have significantly empowered poor people, especially women, in rural areas.
  • SHGs have helped immensely in reducing the influence of informal lenders in rural areas.
  • SHGs help borrowers overcome the problem of lack of collateral. Women can discuss their problem and find solutions for it.

IN Ships to participate in International Fleet Review at Qingdao, China

  • IN Ships Kolkata and Shakti are scheduled to arrive Qingdao, China on 21 Apr 2019 to participate in the International Fleet Review as part of 70TH Anniversary celebrations of PLA (Navy).

International Fleet Review (IFR)

  • International Fleet Review (IFR) is a parade of naval ships, aircraft and submarines, and is organised by nations to promote goodwill, strengthen cooperation and showcase their organisational capabilities.
  • IFR also serves as an ideal platform for world’s navies to showcase their prowess and indigenous ship designing and ship building capabilities in a global/ international arena.
  • The second IFR conducted by India off Visakhapatnam in Feb 2016 saw overwhelming participation of 50 navies with nearly 100 warships.

INS Kolkata and fleet support ship INS Shakti in IFR 

  • The Indian Navy would be represented in the IFR at Qingdao by indigenously built stealth guided missile destroyer INS Kolkata and fleet support ship INS Shakti.
  • INS Kolkata is equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors to address threats in all dimensions of naval warfare.
  • INS Shakti, a replenishment ship, is one of the largest tankers displacing over 27,000 tonnes and capable of carrying 15,000 tonnes of liquid cargo and over 500 tonnes of solid cargo including victuals and ammunition.
  • The visit of Indian Navy’s most potent destroyer and versatile fleet support ship showcases India’s prowess, reach and sustainability in addition to indigenous ship building capability.
  • PLA (Navy) in China is celebrating its 70TH Anniversary in the sea of Qingdao, east China’s Shandong Province.
  • The People’s Liberation Army Navy, i.e. PLA (Navy), is the naval warfare branch of the People’s Liberation Army, which is the national armed force of the People’s Republic of China.

Media Clarification on Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen)

  • An opinion piece titled “The truth about Swachh Bharat” was published yesterday in The Telegraph.
  • The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation recorded its response to the claims made in the piece about the progress made under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) and the veracity of the findings of the National Annual Rural Sanitation Survey 2018-19.
  • The NARSS 2018-19 is the largest independent sanitation survey in the country to date, making it the most representative sanitation survey in the country.

  • The National Annual Rural Sanitation Survey 2018-19 was conducted by an Independent Verification Agency under the World Bank support project to the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen).

Findings of the Survey

  • 1 per cent of households in rural India have access to toilets during the survey period and 96.5 per cent of those who had access to toilets uses them.
  • The Survey re-confirmed the open defecation free (ODF) status of 90.7 per cent villages which were declared so by various districts and states and remaining villages also had sanitation coverage of about 93 per cent.
  • 4 per cent of the villages surveyed were found to have minimal litter and minimal stagnant water.

Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin)

  • The Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan has been restructured into the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin).
  • The mission aims to make India an open defecation free country in Five Years.
  • It seeks to improve the levels of cleanliness in rural areas through Solid and Liquid Waste Management activities and making Gram Panchayats Open Defecation Free (ODF), clean and sanitised.
  • The Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) is a people-led sanitation movement in rural India and is on track to achieve an ODF India by October 2019.
