National Mission on Cultural Mapping

National Mission on Cultural Mapping (NMCM) has mapped data of 14.53 lakh artists/artisans.

What is NMCM?

National Mission on Cultural Mapping (NMCM) is a scheme conceptualized for the purpose of developing a comprehensive data base of artists, art forms and other resources.

  • The relevant data is gathered from cultural organizations in the Ministry of Culture, other Ministries and also States on a robust IT-enabled platform. 
  • The Scheme is administered by the Ministry of Culture. 

Highlights:

  1. The NMCM was approved in 2017 by the Ministry of Culture, to build a comprehensive database of artists, art forms and other resources from organisations under the Ministry.
  2. It is aimed at addressing the necessities of preserving the threads of rich Indian Art and Cultural Heritage.
  3. It also aims at converting vast and widespread cultural canvas of India into an objective Cultural Mapping while creating a strong “Cultural Vibrancy” throughout the nation.
  4. It encompasses data mapping, demography building, formalising the processes and bringing all cultural activities under one umbrella for better results.
  5. The work on creating a database for folk arts and mapping of heritage of villages would be carried out over five years (From 2017).
  6. Volunteers from the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, the National Service Scheme and students of sociology and social work would be deputed to collect such data from villages.

Progress under the mission so far:

  • Relevant data in respect of 14.53 lakh artists/ artisans has been collected from various sources viz. Ministry of Textiles, Sangeet NatakAkademi, Lalit Kala Akademi, Sahitya Akademi, National School of Drama, Centre for Cultural Resources and Training, Zonal Cultural Centres, Kalakshetra Foundation etc.
  • The National Mission on Cultural Mapping (NMCM) has been handed over to the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), which starts a trial run in 75 villages in October 2021.

IGNCA:

Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) was established in 1987 as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Culture, as a centre for research, academic pursuit and dissemination in the field of the arts.

  • The Arts’ encompass a wide range of subjects – from archaeology and anthropology to the visual and performing arts, enveloping them in a complementary and non-demarcated vision.
  • The IGNCA has a trust (Board of Trustees), which meets regularly to give general direction about the Centre’s work. The Executive Committee, drawn from among the Trustees, functions under a Chairman.
  • IGNCA aims to complete mapping in 5,000 villages by the end of financial year 2021-2022.
