Relevance : GS Paper II
Trump administration’s recent actions threaten India-U.S. relations.
Recent India- US relations
- Earlier U.S. was actively wooing India as a strategic counterweight to China.
- Then the term ‘Indo-Pacific region’ appeared.
- Us changed the name of the U.S. Pacific Command to U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.
- However, the Trump administration seems to have reversed course in recent months.
- Non-renewal of the exemption granted to India.
- Threat to impose sanctions on India if it buys the S-400 missiles.
- Removal of India from GSP.
Are above actions justified?
- These three decisions indicate that US is impervious to Indian interests.
- US no longer seems to discriminate between friend and foe.
- US appears overlook the fact that it needs reliable friends and allies.
Conclusion
India should increase its foreign policy options.
