Gist of Editorials: A Rocky Road for Strategic Partners | GS – II

Relevance :  GS Paper  II

Trump administration’s recent actions threaten India-U.S. relations.

Recent India- US relations

  • Earlier U.S. was actively wooing India as a strategic counterweight to China.
  • Then the term ‘Indo-Pacific region’ appeared.
  • Us changed the name of the U.S. Pacific Command to U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.
  • However, the Trump administration seems to have reversed course in recent months.
    • Non-renewal of the exemption granted to India.
    • Threat to impose sanctions on India if it buys the S-400 missiles.
    • Removal of India from GSP.

Are above actions justified?

  • These three decisions indicate that US is impervious to Indian interests.
  • US no longer seems to discriminate between friend and foe.
  • US appears overlook the fact that it needs reliable friends and allies.

Conclusion

India should increase its foreign policy options.
